News from Polson High School

POLSON — Polson High School will be hosting two events to help all area students complete and file their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). On Tuesday, Jan. 5, a representative from the Student Assistance Foundation of Montana will be in the PHS auditorium at 6:30 p.m. for an informational session on how to submit the FAFSA, the first step in the process to secure federal, state, and institutional aid.

“About $150 billion in federal grants, loans, and work-study funds is available each year, and that doesn’t include the state and institutional aid that is out there,” said Rhonda Safford, College Goal Montana statewide coordinator.

Polson High School will then host College Goal Montana on Monday, Feb. 1, in the PHS library. Volunteers will be on hand from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. to help students and families submit their FAFSA online. No appointment is necessary.

The following items will be needed in order to complete the FAFSA: FSA ID—both students and parents will need FSA IDs if the student is under the age of 24 (go to fsaid.ed.gov to get your FSA ID); Social Security numbers for both student and parents; 2015 federal tax returns (or 2014 return in 2015 is not complete); W-2s, tribal income, other aid information (TANF, child support, other benefits); additional asset information such as money market funds, stock, and other investments.

The priority FAFSA filing date for Montana schools is March 1, with the exception of the University of Montana and Missoula College which have a priority deadline of Feb. 15.

More information about College Goal Montana can be found at SmartAboutCollege.org. If you need additional information about either event, please contact Emily Johnson, School Counselor at Polson High School, at 406-883-6351, ext. 205 or ejohnson@polson.k12.mt.us
