RONAN — The Valley Journal welcomes sports reporter Kent Luetzen to its staff.

In 2014 Luetzen earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from the University of North Dakota, with an emphasis in broadcast journalism. He wrote and reported weekly stories for Studio One, the college broadcast station, and worked at a radio station in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Luetzen competed on the college track team for two years.

“I grew up playing as many sports as I could,” Luetzen said. “Then in high school you had to choose three sports. That was the hardest decision I’ve had to make.”

Luetzen’s mom Patricia—who coaches Polson High varsity volleyball — played volleyball for Penn State and has coached for 25 years.

“Volleyball practice was my daycare. I remember waking up in my Barney sleeping bag at 7 a.m. practice,” Luetzen recalls.

While studying abroad in Australia for six months, Luetzen realized he loved to travel.

“I got the bug,” he said, continuing on to visit Rome before becoming a contestant on a Norwegian reality show, “Alt for Norge,” known in America as “The Great Norway Adventure.” Luetzen spent three months traveling Norway and competing in cultural challenges during taping.

The aspects of journalism that Luetzen enjoys are getting involved in the community and the creativity of taking a story from conception to completion.
