News from Dayton Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization

DAYTON — The Dayton Elementary PTO is raffling off a 2016 Yamaha Kodiak 700 4-wheeler to raise funds for school improvements. Tickets are $20 each or 6 for $100. Only 3,000 tickets will be sold and the winner will be drawn when all tickets have been sold or on Sept. 10, 2016, at Dayton Daze. Tickets can be purchased at Ronan Sports & Western in Ronan, Whitefish Credit Union in Polson, The Idle Spur in Dayton, Points North in Rollins, and Penco Power Products and Sportsman Ski Haus in Kalispell.

Dayton Elementary School is a K-6 public school located on the West Shore of Flathead Lake between Polson and Kalispell. The school has seen an increase in their student population of more than 200 percent in the last 10 years from 25 students to currently 57 students. Enrollment is expected to continue to increase for the next 10 years.

Dayton Elementary is believed to be Montana’s oldest continuously operating school. It was established as a two-room school house in 1910 and operated as a two-room school until 2005, when the school underwent an extensive expansion adding four classrooms and a lunchroom.

Due to the significant increase, the student body has outgrown their current facilities. The school does not have a gym and physical education classes are currently held outside, regardless of weather conditions. The library is located in the school foyer, while art classes are held in the cafeteria, which also serves the location of the After School Program. The school’s annual Christmas program is held by combining two classrooms. This year, the program was held at the Methodist Church Camp to accommodate all our students and their families.

Funds raised from the raffle will be used to retain an architect to assist the school with analyzing its current facilities, soliciting information from parents and community members and developing a plan to expand the school facilities. The expansion would include a multipurpose room that would include a gym, a separate library and additional classrooms.

Tickets can also be purchased by contacting the Dayton School at 406-849-5484 or Amanda Adams at 406-360-8597 or ranstrom34@gmail.com. Also check us out on Facebook at www.facebook.com/daytonelementarymt or our school website at www.daytonschool.net
