ARLEE — Did you know the income tax was first enacted in 1862 by Congress and President Lincoln to pay the expenses of the Civil War?  The tax lasted 10 years and was repealed. You can learn more about its rocky road to permanency at: www.irs.gov/uac/history.

On Tuesday, March 29, an AARP Smart Driving Course will be given at the Arlee Senior Center from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Coffee and snacks will be provided and there is no test to pass. You can receive a percentage deduction on your insurance premium from most insurance companies. Call 406-726-3213 to sign up. AARP members will be charged $15 and non-members will be charged $20.

Wouldn’t it be nice not to have to think up a lunch menu, fix and serve it, and then clean it up? Yes, that would be really nice once in a while. For $4 for anyone 60 years and over, and only $5 for those under 60 years, anyone can have a three-course lunch that includes a salad, an entree, and a dessert; not to mention a nice visit with congenial company for a relaxing lunch break. You would be giving yourself a treat, and helping the Arlee Senior Center meet its goals of providing a good meal in an enjoyable atmosphere at a reasonable cost.

The center has a rotating stock of paperback books, a table full of puzzles you can check out, a pool table that needs someone to tickle its felt, and an eclectic selection of odds and ends and whatnots and nick-knacks. We’ll consider trading, if you have some interesting odds and ends you’re tired of.

The Arlee Center board of directors will meet on Monday, April 4, at 10:30 a.m. Any one interested in the center, or just curious as to what we do is welcome to attend. Please feel free to come by.

The April 1-13 menus is:

—  Meals are served at noon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays.

—  Wednesday, March 30: pork roast dinner

—  Friday, April 1: pulled pork on a bun

—  Monday, April 4: roast chicken dinner and birthday cake

—  Wednesday, April 6:  Polish sausage with potatoes and kraut

—  Friday, April 8: grilled cheese sandwich, tomato soup, cheesecake

—  Monday, April 11: baked potatoes with chili, Waldorf salad

—  Wednesday, April 13: sweet and sour pork over rice, chocolate cake
