News from the Boys and Girls Club

LAKE COUNTY – Each month at the Boys and Girls Club of the Flathead Reservation and Lake County, the staff has the painstaking task of choosing two Members of the Month – one boy and one girl who have exemplified the six pillars of good character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. It’s a hard task, but each month, the staff manages to select just two Club Members who have been particularly strong leaders in the Club. This April at the Boys & Girls Club Polson Unit, Patricia Hartman and Elijah Cole have been nominated as the notable Members of the Month. At the Ronan Unit, Karis Lyn Moran and Ivan Calico have been nominated as the notable Members of Month.

A Club Member for two years now, Patricia, age 10, is being recognized as an outstanding Club citizen. She is a role model for every girl at the Club. Incredibly mature for her age, Patricia is extremely responsible, always completing her homework diligently during PowerHour and assisting staff with Club chores without even being asked. A friendly, kind and helpful young woman, her favorite thing about the Club is getting to work with the AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America. The VISTAs are full-time volunteers posted throughout the country to support non-profits in the fight against poverty. She enjoys the VISTAs because they are nice, helpful and closer to her own age. (Minimum age for VISTA service is 18 years old). On the weekends, Patricia likes to have sleepovers with her friends, read and watch her favorite TV show, “Ellen,” with her mom. When she is older, she would like to either be a special education teacher or go to beauty school.

As the exceptional young gentleman of the month, Elijah Cole, age 6, has been nominated for being extremely mature and respectful to all the staff. He has only been a Club member for two months, but he has transitioned smoothly into Club life. He gets along well with all of his Club peers and is fair and kind to everyone he meets. He is proud of the fact that he handles change well, and he considers himself a traveler, having attended four different schools in two different states already. He also likes being smart and a fast runner. His favorite thing about the Club is playing soccer outside, and on the weekends, he likes to play soccer outside with his friends and their dogs. When he is older, he would like to make computer and video games.

A Club member for three and a half years now, Karis, age 9, has been nominated for showing tremendous personal growth. She has really learned to become a confident, poised young woman, and she treats everyone fairly, showing respect to all the staff and her Club peers. A playful, respectful and unique girl, Karis most enjoys coming to the Club because she feels safe there. She feels that she can truly be herself at the Club and feels comfortable speaking to the Club staff about anything. On the weekends, she enjoys drawing, practicing gymnastics and spending time with her brother who just got back from an Army deployment. When she is older, she would like to be either an Indian drummer and dancer and artist or a scientist.

A helpful, playful and friendly young man, Ivan Calico, age 9, has been nominated as a Member of the Month for being an overall good citizen. He is always well behaved, and he is respectful to all staff members. He also demonstrates personal responsibility by completing his homework on time during PowerHour. A Club member for three years now, he most enjoys computer time when he gets to play “Agar-io,” a modern version of “Pacman,” with his Club friends. On the weekends, he likes playing video games and helping his family with household chores. He is looking forward to working at “Dairy Queen” when he is older.

Keep posted about further reports on the exceptional Members of the Boys and Girls Club of the Flathead Reservation and Lake County.
