ST. IGNATIUS – Mission High school students had an Earth Day celebration on Sunday with crafts, games, and recycling.
“Earth Day is important to raise awareness for issues like conservation and climate change and to offer opportunities for youth to help locally with these issues,” said Sarah Keast, student advisor and teacher.
The students are part of a group called Students Serving Community. This was the fourth Earth Day celebration the SSC has organized. Kylie Wells is a first year SSC member and she said that Earth Day brings people together and creates a community around a good cause.
Community members of all ages made natural craft items like pinecone bird feeders covered with peanut butter and an assortment of seeds. They made bugs and butterflies from recycled egg cartons, googly eyes, paint, coffee filters, and food coloring. People held the world in their hands after putting together a tissue paper replica of the earth. Besides crafts, people played games and socialized.
“This is my first year coming and I’m having a lot of fun,” Zion Bolen said.
Earth Day is just one of the many projects the SSC does throughout the year. The club hopes to celebrate Earth Day with the community again next year along with other community service projects.
