DIXON — Come on in for a meal in air-conditioned comfort this summer, at the Dixon Senior Center. We dine at noon every Thursday, and at 6 p.m. on Mondays. All ages are very welcome. The menu: — Thursday, June 9: brunch for lunch - French toast, sausage — Monday, June 13: chicken and rice bake — Thursday, June 16: chicken noodle soup — Monday, June 20: roast — Thursday, June 23: Polish dogs, corn on the cob — Monday, June 27: meatloaf Our cook, Jen, always provides veggies, fruit and homemade bread and dessert with meals. Take-out meals are available. On the fourth Monday of each month the traveling group of pinochle players meet at the Dixon center at 7 p.m. A group of workers for the Dixon melons came over for lunch recently, sporting tans from helping to ready those delicious melons we will be enjoying later this summer. I recently referred to Dixon as the "banana belt" and was corrected to "it is now the Melon Belt!” I am excited to be planting my first raised bed (up to my knees). It seemed very large when I started filling it with various soil and amendments. I hadn't intended to put in so many tomatoes with cages and now I see why the beds are planted closely with seeds and small bedding plants. I put marigolds around the perimeter to deter pests who dare to investigate. It's in full sun and close to water, so bring on the summer. Until harvest I intend to explore all the Farmers Markets in the nearby towns.
