POLSON – Bestselling children’s book author Dav Pilkey, author of “Captain Underpants” and “Dog Man” series is a real-life reading superhero who gives free books to schools across the country this summer. Polson Middle School was selected by Scholastic as the winning school in Montana for the first-ever Dav Pilkey “Be a Reading Superhero” Educator Contest. The school received a new book for every student to bring home to kick off summer reading.

“It was a great to send our kids off with a free book to start their summer reading,” said LouAnne Krantz, the Polson Middle School librarian. “The hardest part for the kids was deciding which book they wanted.”

The contest supports the 2016 Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge – a free reading program that helps kids take a summer leap into books and keep kids reading all summer. Parents and educators can learn more about the challenge and sign-up kids to participate at www. scholastic.com/summer.

This year’s theme for the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is “Be a Reading Superhero.” As the 2016 Scholastic Summer Reading Global Ambassador, Pilkey, together with Scholastic, launched the national contest to ensure all kids have access to great books this summer. “When it comes to kids and reading, there’s no such thing as a guilty pleasure,” Pilkey said. “Even though I struggled with reading growing up because of my dyslexia, I was fortunate to have parents who encouraged me to choose the books I wanted to read: silly books with tons of illustrations that made me laugh out loud. And if it weren’t for these books that motivated me to keep turning the page, I wouldn’t be the writer I am today.”

Applicants were asked to fill out an online application posing the question: “Please tell us what you are doing to help get your students reading this summer?” One school in each U.S. state, territory and in the District of Columbia was selected to win an array of popular, age-appropriate Scholastic titles.
