News from the Boys and Girls Club

LAKE COUNTY — Each month at the Boys and Girls Club of the Flathead Reservation and Lake County, the staff has the painstaking task of choosing two Members of the Month – one boy and one girl from each location who have exemplified the six pillars of good character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. It’s a hard task, but each month, the staff manages to select just two Club Members who have been particularly strong leaders in the Club.

This June at the Boys and Girls Club Polson Unit, Kimora “Koko” Rain Scott and Brenden Jay Griffin have been nominated as the notable Members of the Month.

Although she has only been attending the Club for one month now, Koko, age 6, has been nominated as a Member of the Month for her notable positive citizenship and genuine respect for all the staff and her fellow Club Members. When Koko commits to an activity, she puts in 100 percent effort and is very encouraging to her peers, making sure that everyone is involved and safe. She describes herself as kind, funny and intelligent, and the Club staff couldn’t agree more. Koko is one of the most enthusiastic Club members during BrainGain, a summer learning loss prevention program exclusive to Boys and Girls Clubs. According to Koko, the best thing about the Club is having free time to play games, such as card games. On the weekend, she likes to go to the park, ride the “Happy Hippo” and bake cookies. She looks forward to becoming a professional baker one day.

At age 10, Brenden has been attending the Club for three years. He is now a “Junior Staff” and the Club staff greatly appreciates his help. He takes his responsibility as a “Junior Staff” very seriously, always making sure that the younger Club Members feel included and safe. He is a great role model for anyone seeking to join the “Junior Staff” as he treats everyone with respect and fairness, in and out of the Club. Brenden especially enjoys taking field trips with his fellow Club members, especially if it is to go swimming at the lake or to learn about cultural history at the Ninepipes Museum. An athletic, energetic and determined young man, he enjoys fishing and playing sports on the weekends. When he is older, he would like to train to become a cop. At the Ronan Unit, Makayla Corum and Peyton Davis have been nominated as the notable Members of the Month.

Makayla, 10, has been faithfully attending the Club for four years. The staff have consistently noticed her ability to take on leadership roles within the Club, whether it be assisting a staff member set up or clean up an activity, actively leading discussions during programming such as SMART Girls or ensuring in general that everyone feels included and safe at the Club, especially the younger Club Members. Makayla is quite the role model, always taking personal responsibility for her actions and treating everyone at the Club with the utmost respect and consideration. A helpful, beautiful and nice young woman, Makayla says that her favorite part of the Club is getting to have fun with the staff every day. She especially enjoys going outside and learning new sports with Dario McCarty, a Program Staff whom she considers a great mentor. When she’s not in the Club, she likes to play outside, take care of her baby brother and go swimming. When she is older, she would like to go to school to be a hair stylist.

While he is relatively new to the Club, having been a Member for only three months now, Peyton Davis, age 6, has already been noted by the Club staff as being an overall good citizen who treats everyone fairly and is polite to all he meets. He is also a very hard worker who takes his time on all his activities and projects, always giving his full attention to any task. Peyton describes himself as smart, talented and athletic. His favorite thing about the Club is getting to meet new friends and play computer games with them. When he is not with his fellow Club Members, he enjoys playing Legos and jumping on his trampoline with friends from school. He wants make and design video games one day.
