News from the Area IV Agency on Aging

POLSON — Over the years people have expressed to us that they had trouble with balance and were worried about falling, but couldn’t afford physical therapy. The Agency on Aging looked at several approved programs for falls prevention. We felt the Moving for Better Balance program, which is a modified tai chi based program, would best meet the need that has been expressed. The nearest training for this program is in Oregon. The Agency agreed to send staff member Jane Morton and volunteer Kathi Neeley, a retired staff member, for training this summer. At this time we are offering a three-month class starting in September.

The purpose of this class is to use an adapted Tai Ji Quan exercise program to help improve your balance, mobility, walking, and physical and mental well-being. You will learn a variety of movements from the traditional art of Tai Ji Quan which have been specifically tailored to train balance, self-awareness, and controlling body movements in performing various activities of daily life.

Moving for Better Balance is recommended by the Administration for Community Living, the National Council on Aging, and the American Geriatric Society.

The classes will be at the new exercise studio, Fitness 406, 316B Main Street, Polson. They will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays, 1:30- 2:30 p.m. The first class is Tuesday, Sept. 20. The cost is $50 for a 12-week session. The cost can be adjusted according to income. We are only allowed to have eight to 10 people in our first class as new instructors. Please call Jane at the Area VI Agency on Aging to sign up or for more information. No special equipment or clothing is needed, just wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
