Trumpeter swan restoration topic of meeting

News from Mission Mountain Audubon

POLSON — “Restoring Trumpeter Swans on the Flathead Indian Reservation” by Dale Becker will be Mission Mountain Audubon’s evening program on Thursday Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Polson Library Meeting Room. Everyone is welcome. For many, the Trumpeter Swan represents graceful beauty blended with the call of the wild. As the largest of North American waterfowl, it is also one of the rarest. Hunted for their meat and feathers while their habitat was diminished as settlers moved west, the swans were reduced to near extinction. Becker, Tribal Wildlife Program Manager for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, will discuss the status and welfare of swans on the Flathead Indian Reservation. It is truly an inspiring story of environmental restoration by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes that serves as a reminder of what we can do given the cooperation of various agencies and organizations as well as the dedication of sufficient resources, personnel, and cutting-edge scientific research.
