HELENA — Brandi Ries, a former DOVES staff attorney who provided legal representation to survivors in Lake County and Flathead Indian Reservation, and Robin Turner, co-chairs of the State Bar of Montana Justice Initiatives Committee, are recipients of the Montana Board of Crime Control’s 2016 Innovative Community Improvement Award. The award is presented to a deserving individual (or group of individuals) who has, through a specific campaign or program, made lasting contributions to promote public safety and crime prevention within their community.

Ries is an attorney with the Ries Law Firm in Missoula and Turner is the Legal Director of the Montana Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence.

Upon taking the office two years ago, the two attorneys established the first Standing Committee on Domestic and Sexual Violence, launching a legal community campaign that included an unprecedented focus on domestic violence in The Montana Lawyer. A series of articles were published throughout the year and culminated in a statewide, day-long domestic violence continuing legal education session for attorneys and advocates at the Alexander Blewett III School of Law in Missoula. Ries and Turner have been deeply committed to survivors from the beginning of their respective careers.

In her private practice, Turner has provided invaluable assistance to survivors. She is now the Legal Director at the Montana Coalition Against Domestic Violence where she advances policies and initiatives that forever change the landscape of how Montana serves its survivors.

The awards were presented at an awards breakfast on Thursday, Oct. 6 at the 10th Annual Montana Crime Prevention Conference in Billings, Montana. The annual conference, now in its 10th year, focuses on crime prevention, public safety, juvenile justice and victim assistance programs.
