RONAN – It’s time to buy a paper lantern from the Ronan High School Student Council members for the lighting ceremony on Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the school.

“We will light them to remember loved ones that have passed away or for people that can’t be with us for the holidays,” RHS Student Council Vice President Jenaya Burns said.

Student council members are selling the lanterns for $5 each from now to the end of the ceremony.

“You don’t have to be there when we light them off,” she said. Council members are volunteering to light the lanterns for anyone that can’t attend the lighting ceremony.

The council has 100 lanterns available to sell.

“We hope a lot of people participate,” she said. She wants to fill the sky with lanterns.

In the past, the lanterns drifted up over the school’s parking lot. The biodegradable lanterns usually float over U.S. Highway 93.

“I light one to honor my aunt and it can be emotional, but I’ve never seen anyone cry,” she said. “It’s an awesome experience.”

The council is giving out candy canes at the event and possibly hot chocolate. To purchase a lantern, call the school at 406-676- 3390, ext. 7543.
