News from Tom Fieber, Mission Valley Shooting Club

RONAN — Our 2016 program for Youth Shoots at the Mission Valley Shooting Club near Ronan came to the end of the year at the Dec. 1 shoot, with rewards presented to participants who competed throughout the year.

Our top shooter of the year with the most first place finishes was decided on the final shoot of the year. Andrey Bauer and Isaac Cantlon were tied for the most first place finishes, but it was Andrey who pulled out the win. This is the fourth year in a row that Andrey has taken this award. He received a certificate and a $60 gift certificate to Ronan Sports and Western. Andrey and his father, Ken Bauer, were great supporters of the shoots. Ken came up with multiple challenges for the kids throughout the year.

If Isaac had won this shoot he would have been the youngest shooter to do so. He will be a tough one to beat in the future.

The prize for best attendance was awarded to Isaac. He earned a $40 gift certificate to Ronan Sports and Western. Isaac also won a raffle for four boxes of 22 shells donated by Michael Pierce. Nathan Cantlon donated a rifle scope that was won by Shelby Tryon of St. Ignatius.

I wish I could name everyone who comes out to these events and makes them work. Thanks to all of the parents, grandparents and volunteers who help. We average close to 150 youth shooters a year that participate. Not only kids but adults as well shoot with and combine scores with the kids.

Each time a youth attends their name goes into a drawing for a .22-caliber rifle and scope that Ronan Sports and Western donates each year. This year’s winner was Tyler Kendall of Ronan.

These shoots normally happen on the first Sunday of each month. Lunch starts at noon and shooting starts at 1 p.m. We supply all of the equipment and food so all the kids, ages 8 to 18, need to bring is a parent or guardian with them. Families learn to safely handle and use .22-caliber rifles. Every youth that attends wins a prize. This is open to all youths and there is no cost to attend.

The Mission Valley Shooting Club, myself and other donations provide funding to keep this going. Special thanks to Rob Shrider of Ronan Sports and Western and Andy Larsson of Skinner Sights of St. Ignatius. They have been supporting us throughout as we are starting our ninth year. Our next shoot will be starting Jan. 8, 2017.

Come out and join us.
