Local coaches inducted into MCA Hall of Fame

 

The Montana Coaches Association proudly announced they will induct eleven 2017 Hall of Fame members. Two inductees are from Polson. 

     Robert Hislop has coached for 36 years and has been a Montana Coaches Association member for 35. He has experienced success at every level and in a variety of sports, including basketball and track, but his greatest achievements have been in his 26-year tenure as the Polson Tennis Coach. His tennis teams have 8 top-4 finishes including 3 state championships and 2 runner-up spots, along with an amazing 18 divisional titles. He is an 8-time Montana Coaches Association Coach of the Year nominee and a 3-time winner. Bob was also a finalist for NHSACA Tennis COY and spoke at that national convention. Coach Hislop is also state Class A Tennis Tournament director.

The sport of softball and Polson High School have been fortunate to have Coach Larry L. Smith involved for 31 years, 29 serving as head mentor. He has guided his Polson Pirates to 11 conference titles and an incredible 11 state trophies, 7 of them being state crowns. A 9-time Montana Coaches Association Coach of the Year nominee and a 5-time winner, he was also named Regional Coach of the Year 4 times and has been a NHSACA national finalist 3 times. Coach Smith is a 30-year MCA member.

MCA Clinic Awards Ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 3, at the in the Great Falls High School auditorium. Family and friends are invited. All attendees are invited to a complimentary luncheon in the cafeteria immediately after the ceremony.  


Golf for Griz tourney coming to Ronan

 

RONAN – University of Montana Grizzlies coaches and staff will again play with area golfers during the Annual Memorial  Golf for the Griz Tournament in Ronan Friday, May 19.

The co-ed scramble will be followed by a whole pig barbecue and trimmings plus Rocky Mountain oysters. The Mission Mountain Chapter of the Grizzly Scholarship Association (GSA) sponsors the tourney on the Mission Mountain Golf Course. Last year, 16 teams participated in the scholarship fundraiser. The fee for participants is $80 per golfer ($70 for MMGC card holders). The fee includes golf, barbecue and prizes. The charge for those who only want the barbecue is $25. Hole sponsorships, which include sponsor signs at tee boxes, are available for $100.

The four-person 18-hole scramble will tee off with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. The barbecue will begin at 4 p.m. All proceeds from the tournament go toward scholarships for U of M Grizzly student athletes.

 

Entries may be picked up and dropped off at the golf course or sent to Mission Mountain Golf Course, 46664 Golf Course Way, Ronan MT 59864, attention Joey. Entry fees must accompany the entries. Checks must be made out to Mission Mountain Chapter GSA. Individual entries will be teamed up with other individual entries to form teams. No entries will be accepted on the day of the tournament.
