HAMILTON – The Ronan Chiefs had a tough week, falling to a talented Florence squad before being beat by Loyola in a consolation match to bring their season record to 8-13 overall. For Ronan to enter the District Tournament, they first had to beat Mission in a play-in game earlier in the week.

Against Mission, the Chiefs led 11-10 after the opening eight minutes of the game and went on a 15-6 run in the second to lead 26-16 at the break.

Ronan held Mission to only 11 second-half points, cruising to a 46-27 win.

Carston Baertsch led Ronan with 12 points, while Edmond Dupuis added 10. Team leader Brady Oakland tallied nine, while Marcus Hungerford contributed five.

For Mission, Austin Durglo led his team with 10 points, while Jarred Smith-Brown, Dylan Evans and Stuart Grant all added four. The loss ended Mission’s season with a 3-16 overall record.

The win granted the Chiefs a bid in the 6-B District Tournament in Hamilton, where they took on top-seeded Florence Feb. 17 in the semifinals. The Chiefs hung tight with Florence during the opening quarter, but the Falcons took off with a 23-11 run before the half to lead 31-18.

Ronan’s defense stepped up in the third frame, holding offensive powerhouse Florence to only three points, allowing the Chiefs to reduce their point deficit. This didn’t sit well with the Falcons, as they rallied to finish the game strong, putting up 17 fourth-quarter points while holding Ronan to nine points to end the game with a 51-35 win.

Zach Wagner led Ronan with eight points, while Baertsch and Marley Tanner tacked on seven. Dupuis contributed another five.

Aaron Ward led the Falcons with a game-high 25 points, while Ryne Baerlocher contributed seven.

The loss moved Ronan to the consolation game, where things didn’t get any easier when the Chiefs played Loyola Saturday. The Rams led 13-11 at the beginning of the second frame, but Loyola took charge with a 21-14 run in the second quarter. The run proved to be a devastating blow to the Chiefs. They were able to keep up with Loyola in the second, where they were only outscored by seven points, but the solid effort wasn’t enough. The Rams won by 10, 56-46.

Wagner led Ronan with 10 points, while Dupuis and Oakland added eight. Hungerford contributed another seven.

For Loyola, Forestt Cooper led a trio of double-digit scorers, putting up 14 points. Josh Janssen tallied 12, while J.J. Anderson added 11.
