2017 Letters About Literature student competition open

Montana’s Center for the Book, a program of Humanities Montana, will be giving Montana students a chance to submit to the national Letters About Literature competition again this year. Letters About Literature is a reading and writing contest for students in grades four-12. Students are asked to read a book, poem, or speech and write to the author (living or dead) about how the book affected them personally. Letters are judged on state and national levels. Tens of thousands of students from across the country enter Letters About Literature each year. For more information on how to submit, ask a teacher, email: brooke.beighle@humanitiesmontana.org, or go to: http://read.gov/letters/.

Deadline is Jan. 12, 2018.

Learn mental health first aid

ST. IGNATIUS — One in five Americans has a mental illness, but many are reluctant to seek help or do not know where to turn for care. Symptoms of mental health and substance use problems can be difficult to detect – and it is not easy for friends and family to know how to step in. The Flathead Reservation Human Rights Coalition will offer the National Council for Behavioral Health’s Mental First Aid training and certification on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., (lunch and snacks provided), at Mission Valley United Methodist Church, 70715 Highway 93, top of Post Creek Hill.

This eight-hour course prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis and refer them to the proper resources. CEU credits will be offered for participants. For more information or to participate in this all day training call 406-81008 or jschmidt06@centurytel.net or go to: www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org.
