Before filling up on the culinary onslaught of Thanksgiving dinner, nearly 140 runners laced up their running shoes for the 10th annual Turkey Trot 5K that started near the intersection of US Highway 93 and State Highway 35.

“The race went really well and everything went smooth at registration,” Polson Running vice-president Lauren Arnold said. “We had several great volunteers who really helped out with registration.”

Arnold also noted, “The weather mostly held off and wasn’t as bad as predicted.”

Chris Alfiero won the overall race and men’s division with a time of 18:04:94, while Bea Frissell won the women’s division with a time of 21:59:01. This is the second consecutive year that both runners finished first in their respective divisions.

For many, running in the Turkey Trot is more than a hearty competition or chance to burn off a little calories before the big feast, it’s about family, celebration and tradition.

The Turkey Trot has been a fixture on Melissa Scott’s calendar. “I come run every year,” Scott said. Scott ran in her third consecutive race this year with her two young boys in celebration of being a heart surgery survivor.

“It’s a family tradition to come out Thanksgiving morning and run,” Polson cross country coach Jenni Brown said. For many participants the Turkey Trot is a terrific way to spend time with family, enjoy some fresh air and get in some exercise before they gather for the family meal.

This year the Turkey Trot raised money to benefit the Polson Loaves and Fish Pantry, an organization that aids Mission Valley area families who struggle with food security.

Polson Running’s next race will be the 5th annual Sorry ‘Bout That Half Marathon on Jan. 13. Check out their website www.polsonrunning.com for more information.
