Under the haze of congratulations, carnations and family visits for high school graduation lurks a celebration of another sort — keggers. Sometimes these parties lead to MIPs or even a tragic car wreck.

Polson parents have a solution and a way to celebrate every senior’s graduation. As they have in the past, a group of parents of PHS seniors are planning a safe, drug-free, alcohol-free party for graduates.

The celebration is scheduled for the evening of graduation, June 2, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Polson Middle School gym. All PHS graduating seniors are welcome, and tickets are $15. Any student wishing to attend will be able to regardless of ability to pay. People have donated so students who can’t afford the ticket can go to the party.

“We want to celebrate the accomplishments of every student,” said Sharon Murphy, co-chair of the event.

The senior party has been popular in the past, with about 80 percent of the seniors attending. Poker tables, laser tag, climbing wall, dancing, karaoke, a ping pong tournament, a Wii dancing contest, an inflatable joust, riding the mechanical bull and other surprises will provide plenty for the students to do.

“We’ll have the most amazing food from around the world,” Murphy added.

Each student attending will receive a prize — worth at least $25. Then at about 1:45 p.m., everyone who attends will be eligible for the grand prize drawing, but the seniors have to be present to win.

Darlene Cooper, who’s been working on donations for the party, said, “I believe we’re going to have an iPad.”

Ticket sales help pay for the prizes, but parents will be fundraising. Local businesses have been supporting the party, but organizers are seeking more dollars for food and prizes would be great, so students can win fabulous prizes, which parents committee wants the community to know were all donated by and purchased in the Polson community.

The senior party press release said, “We are letting the public know about this event because we think there may be people out there who, while they may not know these kids personally, perhaps have enjoyed watching band or choir concerts or seen their talents while judging a speech and debate competition or cheered for them at a sporting event.”

Even a small donation would help and is appreciated.

For community members who would like to donate to the senior class party, an account for the PHS senior class party has been established at First Citizen’s Bank, and receipts are available. Or folks may mail a check for the party to Lori Cote, 407 21st Ave. in Polson. Donations of prizes are also welcome.
