News from VFW Post 5652

RONAN – The weeks before Memorial Day members of VFW Post 5652 and AL Post 138 power washed, painted and drilled crosses that needed maintenance before using them at the cemetery. On May 23, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Ronan Ward, and others assisted in putting crosses and flags near the tombstones of veterans at the Ronan Cemetery. The group has assisted for several years putting up the crosses and they feel it is a great honor to remember those who have served our country in the armed forces. Tom Leafty, a member of the Honor Guard and American Legion Post 138 and a member of the church helped organize the group.

On Memorial Day, following the parade in Ronan led by the Honor Guard, they assembled once again at the cemetery to honor our fallen veterans. A prayer was given by Tom Leafty. The President’s Proclamation was read and comments were made by VFW Post 5652 Commander and Honor Guard member Ron Merwin. A special song was sung by Jim Pettit, Honor Guard and VFW member, and his son Josiah. The Laverne Parrish citation was read by Honor Guard Commander and AL Commander Glen Sharbono. A wreath was placed at the base of the American Legion memorial by AL and VFW auxiliary member Jessie Merwin. The Honor Guard rifle squad then gave salute followed by Taps played by Honor Guard and VFW member Jerry Ackers.

Next, they gathered at the VFW Post 5652 for a lunch provided by the Post and the Auxiliary. Approximately 125 were served. Thank you to all who participated in any way to honor our veterans.
