Mission Valley hosts busy high school rodeo weekend

POLSON – The Montana High School Rodeo Association made a weekend stop in Polson at the Les Baldwin Arena located on the Polson Fairgrounds this past Saturday.

More than 50 cowboys and cowgirls from high schools around Northwestern Montana saw competition during the rodeo event hosted by the Mission Valley High School Rodeo Team.

The first go-around saw two local athletes finish first in their given events. Ronan’s Maggie Lund won the girls’ breakaway event with the fastest time of the day at 3.39 seconds and placed sixth in the barrels, while Levi McClure won the tie-down event with a time 13.50. Team ropers Zane Walchuk and Kane McAllister of Ronan turned in a second-place finish with a time of 16.56. Trapper McAllister nabbed a fourth place in the tie down. 

Charlo’s Morgan Shepard placed fifth in the pole bending, seventh in goat tying and ninth in the barrels.

Ronan’s Kylie Lund rounded out the local winners on the first go-around with a couple fifth-place finishes in the goat tying and barrel race.

In the second go-around, four local athletes finished atop the leader board. Charlo’s Hailey Weible raced to a first-place finish in the barrels with a time of 18.36. Ronan’s Trapper McAllister tied up a first-place in the tie-down event with a time of 25.57, while Kylie Lund posted the winning time in the breakaway with a time of 4.29 seconds.

Polson’s Gavin Knutson won the bull riding with his 71-point ride, while rodeo teammate Caden Fitzpatrick turned in a second-place 68-point ride.

In the second-round, Kylie Lund finished eighth in the barrels and fourth in the goat tying. Ronan’s Cheyenne Lytle placed tenth in the barrels followed by Shepard in eleventh. Shepard also finished fifth in the goat tying, while Weible placed seventh.
