POLSON – On the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 28, the Polson Police Department received anonymous information that Eli Stops also known as “Sleepy Loko” was hiding from law enforcement at 608 2nd Street West. Stops was wanted by the US Marshals Service for an outstanding federal warrant.

Polson officers went to the residence in an effort to locate Stops. He was seen inside the residence by officers.  Officers entered the residence, at which point, Stops concealed and barricaded himself inside the attic.

A perimeter was established and the proper procedures were followed. Stops was positively confirmed as being in the attic. Negotiations went on for a couple of hours with no success. Eventually, oleoresin capsicum was sprayed into the attic.  Negotiations resumed after the OC deployment and Stops surrendered to law enforcement without further incident. Stops was transferred into the custody of the US Marshals Service.

The Polson Police Department thanks the following agencies who helped to bring this incident to a peaceful resolution: Flathead Tribal Police Department, Ronan Police Department, Montana Highway Patrol, Polson City Fire Department, Polson Ambulance Crew, Lake County Emergency Communications and the patient residents of the neighborhood.

“The level of commitment and courage your law enforcement team showed today is nothing short of extraordinary,” said Chief of Police Wade Nash. “I am very happy (with) our department and the assisting agencies.”
