RONAN — The Arlee Scarlets battled their way through the District 14-C Tournament but were removed from this weekend’s Divisional Tournament in Butte by the Noxon Red Devils, 55-45.

First, the Scarlets faced Hot Springs, cooling the Savage Heat 54-37 Feb. 16. Whitney Malatare scored 15 points in the win after the Scarlets built a lead in the third quarter.

Next up, the Scarlets tangled with eventual tournament runner-up, the Charlo Lady Vikings, on Feb. 17, who cruised past Arlee 49-25 to punch their ticket to the championship game against the undefeated Superior Lady Bobcats. The Lady Vikings led from the start, going 17-3 in the first quarter. Deondra Brown paced Charlo with 16 points, followed by Rachel Hoyt and Kinley Pope with nine each. Alexis Shick and Mahalia Hendren had seven points apiece for Arlee.

The Scarlets faced the St. Regis Tigers Feb. 18 in a loser-out game. Arlee upended the outmatched Tigers 55-36 as Whitney Malatare took charge in the fourth, scoring 15 points to finish with a game-high 30. Teammates Tiffany O’Neill and Alexis Shick scored eight apiece. Pilar Cantrell-Field, who had 14 for the 3-15 Tigers, led St. Regis.

That same day, the Red Devils sidelined Arlee after winning 55-45. Kim Marich led Noxon with a game-high 32 points followed by Cara Stettler with 14. Malatare guided the Scarlets with 16 to end their season 12-10.

“We did pretty well, we didn’t do as good as we would have liked in the tournament,” said coach Richard Bachmeier, adding that many players will return next year, which bodes well for the team. “We’ll be better.”
