News from CSKT

PABLO – Driven by concerns that young people may not be responding to COVID-19 prevention guidelines, a committee of tribal leaders formed to discuss strategies, which might raise the awareness among teens that they have the power to protect their elders. What emerged was an innovative social media campaign aimed at the ages of 12 to 18.

For the third release of the campaign, the committee recruited Vincent Bird-Webster, aka Yvng Vin, (pronounced Young Vin, a CSKT local musician).

“I love the message and vibe of Vinnie’s track,” said Michelle Mitchell, CSKT’s education department head. “It’s such an important message, especially now that people we know and love have tested positive to COVID-19.”

Yvng Vin’s song premiered at 1 p.m. on Friday with a full video. Local youth who make and post their own “challenge videos” could win a $100 gift card for helping pass along the message.

The purpose of the CSKT COVID Youth Community Care and Awareness Campaign is to create a culturally relevant COVID-19 awareness message for Flathead Reservation youth, which is built on themes such as #ProtectOurElders and #WalkTogetherWell in order to inspire youth to carry the themes to peers, involve family and positively impact health and safety in the tribal community. The hashtags with the video are #ProtectOurElders, #fixyourmask, #csktcovidchallenge, #csktchallenge and #walktogetherwell.

Youth challengers will be asked to follow the artist they respond to (@VincentBirdWeb1) in their post and include the hashtags in order to keep message branding and momentum.

Yvng Vin is a proud member of CSKT. “I fell in love with rap music the first time my dad played 2pac in front of me,” he said. “Once I heard 50 Cent, it solidified my love for rap.”

He continued: “It has been my dream to make big moves and put on for the reservation. I would love to make a real positive change on my rez. It would be surreal to make good money doing something I love to do and being a role model for kids on the rez. I’m gonna make it happen.”

The campaign will feature other local artists in the coming weeks. To date, Kiid Truth and Foreshadow have released original songs and videos that have drawn national attention. The videos are posted on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Soundcloud and Twitter.
