News from Montana Wildlife Federation

HELENA — President-elect Joe Biden indicated Thursday that he plans to nominate Representative Deb Haaland to serve as the next Secretary of Interior. Haaland would be the first Indigenous woman to serve in the role.

“As Interior Secretary, Representative Haaland will bring much needed change to the Department of Interior,” said Tom Puchlerz, president for the Montana Wildlife Federation. “While serving in Congress, Representative Haaland has demonstrated her commitment to protecting our most cherished public lands, waters and wildlife.”

Haaland has served an important role on the House Natural Resources Committee as well as the Public Lands subcommittee where she has been at the forefront of crafting solutions for public lands and the climate crisis. Once confirmed as Interior Secretary, Haaland will play an important role in restoring transparency to the Bureau of Land Management and reversing the Trump Administration’s energy dominance agenda that has come at the expense of fish and wildlife.

“Now more than ever, Montana’s hunters and anglers want transparency and public participation restored in public lands decision making. Representative Haaland comes with the experience and knowledge to not only do that, but also to make sure that the outdoor recreational economy will provide jobs in rural areas, including in rural parts of Montana,” Puchlerz said.
