Birth Announcement
Obituary

Daniel Reum

WHITEHALL —Dan was born at home in Polson on Aug. 10, 1943, and died on Dec. 28, 2020, from complications of COVID after fracturing his hip falling. When Dan was 11, the family moved to Twin Willows Ranch off Post Creek Hill. Dan and his sister Bonnie and brother Norman grew up on that ranch with mom, Mabel Reum, and dad, Clinton, learning many skills and how to work hard.

Dan attended school at St. Ignatius, playing sports and helping on the ranch. After graduation Dan joined the Marines to travel and get schooling after his service. During his military time he met his wife, Sarah (Pounds), and fell in love. Sarah had worked in nursing with his aunt Elsie at the veterans hospital in California. Later that aunt was killed in California on a freeway leaving her four children homeless. Dan and Sarah brought the children to Whitehall and obtained guardianship.

Dan continued schooling for a teaching certificate while raising Wendy, Pam (Rawson), Steve
and David. This began Dan’s true life’s work of helping and mentoring children. After getting his teaching credentials, he taught fifth grade for a number of years in Whitehall and earned his school administration certificate. He became principal of the elementary school and helped establish a Little League baseball team. Coaching became his goal and he was named to athletic director at Whitehall. During this time Dan and Sarah had their first born, Kim (Flynn), and built their home with dad Clinton’s help, and then had their sixth child, Sheri (Johnson).

Dan continued to be involved in many activities in the Whitehall community. He retired in 1987, moved to Alaska as principal of Alaskan villages, St. Michael’s, Akiak, and Nulato, also being involved in the communities, mentoring children, and coaching.

His proudest moment was when he was selected to the Whitehall Hall of Fame for his service to the community. Dan supported an orphanage in the Philippines with monthly donations for 25 years. He dedicated his life to youth coaching, mentoring, teaching sports, and is now our angel in heaven. It is well with your soul, Dan. Your memories will carry on!

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to the Whitehall or Cordova Clubs. Cards may be sent to the family at Box 104, Whitehall, MT.

Memorial services for Dan may be planned this spring/summer.
