News from CSKT

FLATHEAD RESERVATION —  CSKT Division of Fire officials want to update the public on the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ fire danger.

“Although we have received some precipitation, next week fuel moistures will start to lower as temperatures are forecasted to climb into the 90s,” CSKT Division of Fire officials report.

The near-term forecast calls for high temperatures and low relative humidity.  Although no restrictions are in place at this time the Division of Fire would like to stress to the public the importance of fire safety while out working and recreating in the woods: “If you plan to burn, check the weather for the day you are going to burn as well as the following days. It has been windy this spring and there has been numerous escaped fires due to the wind events.”

The Flathead Indian Reservation is currently in moderate fire danger. Please do your part to ensure there is one less spark as a result of your outdoor activities in the heat of the afternoon by considering:

1.  When mowing tall grass, the blade can strike a rock and create a spark.

2.  Safety chains sparking on the road while towing a trailer can create a fire.

3.  Failure to have a spark arrester in your equipment’s exhaust system in grassy areas can be a fire hazard.

If a small fire becomes a full-blown forest fire, it could lead to arson charges, fines and even the bill for all fire-caused costs. For questions, call the Division of Fire at 406-676-2550.
