I have a really fun job today. Okay, I am one of those weird people who thinks their job is fun most days, but today is extra special.

It’s special because I get to tell you a secret. We at the Valley Journal haven’t been totally honest with you. But I think you’ll like this surprise.

Six months ago, we began work on a top-secret project to revolutionize the way news is distributed in the Mission Valley. On Wednesday, that project will be revealed to you, our readers. When you turn on your computer and open your web browser Wednesday morning, type in “www.valleyjournal.net,” but not until you refill your coffee mug, ‘cause you might be here for a while. You’ll find a wealth of information, from news, feature stories, photo galleries, court records, birth and wedding announcements to obituaries, current weather, classifieds and much more, at your fingertips. It’s the all-new Valley Journal website, and it’s better than ever.

We’ve all worked hard to make sure of that. Everyone from our publisher to office manager has had a hand in planning how articles and photos will be displayed and organized on the new site, and we hope you’ll be as excited as we are about the Valley Journal’s new online home. The mobile-friendly site lets you access the latest local news wherever you are, and if you’d like to reread an old article or buy a copy of a picture you saw in the paper, the cutting-edge search function will take you right where you need to be. Smartphone users can check our print edition for QR codes — those little squares that look like out-of-focus crossword puzzles — linked to more photos or extended information on the website.

Reporters can now post breaking news updates on-the-go, and readers can view slideshow photo galleries of all Valley Journal photographs, including the ones we run out of room for in the print edition.

Our full weekly paper will be available at valleyjournal.net every Wednesday, but that’s not all. We’re in the process of uploading each and every Valley Journal article ever written to the archives on the site. So far, online readers can access back issues through mid-June, but the archives will be continually expanded to eventually include everything since the inaugural issue in September 2004.

We’re confident the site will serve readers the best news the Mission Valley has to offer in a friendly, easy-to-use fashion that will keep you coming back for more. Are we right? Please let us know. Your feedback is invaluable as we continue to develop our online presence.

So pull up a chair, cozy up on the couch, or simply reach for your phone and pay us a visit at www.valleyjournal.net. The name is the same, but the experience is brand new.
