THOMPSON FALLS — The Ronan cross-country runners faced heat and smoky air at the Thompson Falls Invitational meet last Thursday, and coupled with the extra demands on athletes during Ronan High School’s homecoming week, the poor conditions resulted in the Chiefs placing fifth as a team, while the Maidens were sixth.

Five runners didn’t compete due to injuries and illnesses, head coach Noelle Decker noted, but she hopes to field a full roster at the team’s next meet in Missoula Saturday.

“Putting it all into perspective, we have reached mid-season, and often this is to be expected about this time of the season,” Decker explained. “The kids sometimes feel a bit more fatigued and their times are slower, but realize physically they will rebound and be stronger at the conclusion of the season, when it really matters.”

Three exchange students have been added to the girls’ roster, one of whom, Felicitas Ludwig, has been running in the Maidens’ top five girls each week.

“Additionally, we gain Maria Nelson and Miriam Schaltz, who are also working hard each week at practice and improving their times,” Decker said. “They have all three been a positive addition to both our varsity and JV girls’ teams.”

On Saturday, the Ronan harriers will head to Missoula for the Mountain West meet, a course with some challenging hills that should give runners a taste of what the state race conditions will be like.

“The kids look forward to this race, and it is a great atmosphere to be a part of,” Decker said. “I am really looking forward to the competition this race provides our runners and seeing how they respond individually.”
