MISSOULA — The Ronan cross-country teams traveled to Missoula for the Mountain West cross-country meet at the University Golf Course last weekend.

For the Chiefs and Maidens, the day was filled with some ups and downs.

“We had some good things happen on the boy’s side of the team but struggled on the girl’s side. Our boys continue to improve each week, and I never know week to week who is going to slide into the top varsity slots,” head coach Noelle Decker said.

JT Probst improved his time to just over 19 minutes, as he is still running himself into shape after missing the first few weeks of practice due to knee issues.

The Chiefs fielded complete varsity and JV teams at the meet, a positive scenario because it puts a little more pressure on each individual to perform well in the races, Decker noted.

“The boys continue to work hard at practice and the next few weeks will be critical,” she said. “We have to really concentrate on getting Zach (Wagner) and Payton (Adams) down to the sub-18s, and hopefully two or three others into the low 18s. I believe the boys are capable, but not only the physical part needs to come, but the mental part as well.”

The Maidens struggled Saturday and were missing some girls, which meant the team didn’t have a full JV squad. Additionally, Jade Gray was unable to finish the varsity race due to health issues.

“Kiana Howell and Jacey Probst lead our girls’ team again this week, and their leadership is going to be imperative over the next few weeks,” Decker said. “Jacey is only a freshman, and she is being asked to fill some pretty big shoes. We are hoping to get everyone healed up and there consistently for the next few weeks in order to compete well at conference championships.”
