News from Sloane Stinson, Montana Department of Transportation

RONAN — The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. have completed paving operations from the US Highway 93 intersection with Round Butte Road and Terrace Lake Road, to the intersection with Third Ave. and Old US 93.

Next week, crews will paint temporary road markings on this section of the highway. Drivers should anticipate turn-lane and single-lane closures where this work is underway.

Paving operations will focus on the approach to the Sinclair gas station and the intersection of Round Butte Road with First Ave. Round Butte Road will be reduced to one lane when this work occurs. Flaggers will be present.

Once this work is complete, paving operations will be suspended until spring.

Crews plan to continue sidewalk construction along Round Butte Road and the southbound couplet, the short segment of roadway connecting First Ave. to US 93.

The southbound couplet will be closed to traffic over the winter.

The installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of US 93 with 3rd Avenue and Old US 93 has been delayed due to unforeseen supplier issues. MDT has sourced another supplier and will keep the public updated.

Crews will be onsite Monday, Nov. 6, through Friday, Nov. 10, from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. All work is dependent on weather and other unforeseen factors.

When traveling through the construction zone, slow down, follow all traffic control, and watch for workers and equipment. The speed limit remains at 35 mph. Please remember to follow posted speed limits when driving through the project site.

 Don’t Crowd the Plow

While driving, be on the lookout for snowplows and give operators room to work. Many plows are hit by private vehicles each winter, with the potential to cause harm to all parties involved. The plow truck and operator are taken out of service immediately following an incident.

Drive safely this winter and keep these tips in mind:

Don’t pass a plow when the TowPlow is deployed. The operator will periodically rotate the TowPlow back in line with the truck to allow vehicles to pass.

Be aware that, where there is one plow working, others may be nearby. The snow cloud created by one plow may obscure presence of additional plows in      adjacent lanes.

When approaching a snowplow from the rear, reduce speed immediately.

When approaching an oncoming plow, don’t crowd the centerline.

Be patient. Plow operators know where they can pull over to let vehicles pass, but remember, the road in front of the plow is likely not as clear as the road behind it.

MDT has tools to help plan for conditions so you can reach your destination safely.
