Polson Pirates

BIGFORK — The Polson Pirate soccer team opened its season with a 3-6 conference loss to Bigfork Aug. 28.

According to head coach Jess Kittle, Bigfork opened up with speed from the Zavala brothers to pressure the Polson defense, but the Pirates were able to make some adjustments and get the lead back going into halftime. In the second half, the Vikings moved Austin Gordon up from the defending position to forward.

“We couldn’t match his speed,” Kittle said.

Sam Heutmaker scored the first goal of his varsity career off of a feed from James Larson in the first half. Larson had another goal in the seventh minute, and Alex Helgeson scored on a corner kick in the 11th minute.

“This first game of the year exposed some of our weaknesses that we will work to correct in practice,” Kittle said. “We also had several players that were not eligible to play in this game because they still needed to get the minimum 10 practices to become game-eligible.”

Soccer games scheduled last week in Belgrade and Livingston were cancelled due to smoke. Polson’s next scheduled game is at 3 p.m. Thursday when the Pirates host Loyola.

They’ll also host Hamilton at noon Saturday.

Lady Pirates

BIGFORK — The Polson Lady Pirate soccer team shut down the Vals 3-0 in a visit to Bigfork Aug. 28, with all three goals courtesy of sophomore midfielder Sarah Howell. Howell was assisted by Linnea Madsen on goals in the fourth and 51st minutes and laid in another solo score in the 77th minute.

According to head coach Michael Hewston, sophomore defenders Melina Jore and Keely Clairmont also stood out in the game, along with junior goalie Monica Cleveland and freshman Tessa Nunlist.

After scheduled matches in Belgrade and Livingston were cancelled due to smoky conditions, the Lady Pirates have two home games this week: Loyola at 5 p.m. Thursday and Hamilton at 2 p.m. Saturday.
