DIXON — With this unexpected mild winter weather (the roads are clear, just a skiff of snow and some piles around), it almost seems like spring is approaching. I know better, though. The multitudes of birds are at my feeder as though this is their only hope for survival. I love seeing bunnies hopping around looking for something nourishing — so far they’ve eluded my hunting cats. And a few nights ago there were three large deer nibbling frozen strawberry plants, as well as little willows and various perennials, through the straw mulch. It’s always fun to see what comes up again in the spring.

Are you noticing the days are getting longer? The center is open for meals at 5 p.m. Mondays, as well as Thursdays at noon. Cook Diane always serves homemade bread, and comes up with new recipes, which turn out deliciously. Come to the best meals with company in Dixon for only $4, and take-out meals are available.

Happy birthday to Vic Charlo, who is glad to have good meals available. His birthday was Jan. 8, a date shared with the wedding anniversary for Norma and Ron Trammell. Norma appreciates being able to take a tasty meal back to Charlo.

Dinner for most of January:

• Thursday, Jan. 10: roast beef

• Monday, Jan. 14: salmon loaf

• Thursday, Jan. 17: chili

• Monday, Jan. 21: pea soup

• Thursday, Jan. 24: chicken and dumplings

There are lots of winter comfort foods coming up. All ages are welcome to join us.
