Sheriff won’t take guns from law-abiding citizens

To the citizens of Lake County:
Recently, I have been asked if I will uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Montana in regard to the current attempts by the federal government to control our rights as citizens to own firearms. As your sheriff, I would like you, the citizens of Lake County, to know where I stand on this issue.
I was raised in a household where owning a gun for the purposes of providing for and the protection of yourself and family was normal. As I grew older, I came to appreciate our forefathers when they sat down to write what ultimately became the Constitution of the United States. The right of the people to keep and bear arms is sacred to me.
It is my belief that those who wrote the Montana Constitution felt strongly enough about the “right to keep and bear arms” that they added it to our state constitution as well. I feel that all law-abiding citizens have the right to own firearms, whether it be one or 100.
Although I recognize that gun violence is a growing problem in this country, I do not believe taking guns from law-abiding citizens is the solution. I do not support nor will I enforce the seizure of firearms from law-abiding Lake County citizens if such a law were to be enacted by the federal government; I will not condone outside agencies coming into our county to do the same.
