POLSON — Children at the Mission Valley Christian Academy got a treat when local author Chris Dawson, came to school to read “Alex the Sea Turtle” to students on Wednesday, March 20.

Dawson shared how the story and book originated. As he read through the book, he explained the deeper meaning of redemption, kindness and love brought out in the story.

“Alex the Sea Turtle” shares how a mischievous young boy can learn a great lesson from the most unlikely of friends. Dawson made the story come alive as he illustrated the ideas of rip tides and other dangers of the sea, doing the right thing and caring for those who are weaker and in need, according to Chris Bumgarner, director of MVCA.

MVCA kindergartner Gracie said, “I liked when the girl took care of Alex the turtle and when the boy screamed.”

Braydon, a MVCA second-grader, couldn’t believe the turtle saved the boy who was mean to him.

Dawson lives in Polson and has been married to Denise for 32 years. They have six children and one grandchild and another one on the way.

Dawson has been a teacher, an over-the-road truck driver, a business and corporate manager and a prison counselor before becoming an author of children’s books.

He began storytelling in a big chair with his children gathered around asking, “Papa, please tell us a story from your mouth.” His passion for the outdoors and the creatures that live there are the basis for Alex and other stories to come.
