POLSON — As lawns and fields are greening up, and crocuses and grape hyacinths peek out of the soil, locals are itching to clean out flowerbeds, roto-till their gardens and rake dried grass out of their lawns.

The City of Polson has a plan to help with all the yard waste, leaves, downed branches and other winter debris. On April 29 at 7 a.m. city trucks and trailers “will take it (Polson) street by street” and haul all the plant waste away, explained Polson street superintendent Terry Gembala.

Leaves and other mulch will be recycled for community gardens, Polson parks superintendent Karen Sargeant added.

Sargeant encouraged neighbors to help neighbors, especially elderly and mobility-impaired folks. Residents are asked to bag leaves, grass and other plant material and stack branches at street side for easier pickup. City employees will have chain saws to hack up especially large branches.

As many city employees as possible will be helping with the clean-up day, Sargeant said, including front office personnel as well as streets, parks, police and fire department employees.

Sargeant added that elderly or disabled people who don’t have helpful neighbors could call her at 883-8206. The Boy Scouts from Troop 1947 have volunteered their help, and Sargeant will schedule and confirm home visits. Folks who call in will need to provide their name, contact phone number and address.

There is a “huge movement to try to promote pride in our city,” Sargeant said. Polson city manager Todd Crossett proposed the clean up day to the city employees and “the city staff jumped on it,” Sargeant said.

The city’s haul away day will segue nicely into the “Clean Up, Green Up Days” sponsored by the Polson Business Community on April 30 and May 1.
