Library offers free preservation workshop

Have you ever wondered what to do with that antique photograph of your great grandparents, the Bible that has been in your family for generations, or the tattered old love letter you found in the attic? What about your grandmother’s crumbling diary or early-day immigration papers?
North Lake County Public Library is hosting a free Preservation Workshop on Thursday, April 11, to help members of the community answer those questions. The workshop will be held at the library from 1 to 3 p.m. in the meeting room. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served, and there will be a free gift for each attendee. The library asks anyone interested to call the circulation desk at (406) 883-8225 to sign up for the free event.
Panelists from the Montana Historical Society will present expert tips on preserving old photographs, letters, and documents. They will discuss preservation techniques and sources of supplies for preservation materials. Representatives from local museums will outline ways to discern which historical items are of importance to communities for preservation. They will outline the types of memorabilia they can accept, and what items they cannot, while also addressing ownership issues.
Sue Jackson from the Montana Memory Project in Helena will present an overview of the MMP and how to access its collections online. North Lake County Library will introduce its two Montana Memory Project projects to the community at that time.
The workshop will also cover how environmental factors can affect the lifespan of historic items, and correct handling practices. North Lake County Public Library will offer information about preservation resources that are available – in their collection, online, and elsewhere. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists regarding their own collections or historical items of concern.
