It was a split week for the Pirates and Lady Pirates last week as the boys' squad went into the holiday break with a 67-59 home loss to visiting Stevensville, while the Lady Pirates pulled out a 42-38 victory over the Lady Yellowjackets on the road.

The Lady Pirates used their full-court press to great success in the opening quarter at Stevenville Tuesday as the extended ball pressure helped Polson jump out to a quick 16-8 lead. Senior post Jonna Grant led the early charge with six of Polson’s 16 points in the opening quarter.

The duo of Breanne Kelley and Riley Kenney continued to pour on the points in the second frame as Polson stretched its lead to 29-18 at the half.

The teams fought a close battle in the third quarter as Polson added just one point to its lead to take a 35-23 lead into the final eight minutes of the contest.

Stevensville came out firing in the final quarter, outscoring the Lady Pirates 15-7, but the comeback fell just short as Polson held on to pick up a four-point win, 42-38.

Kenney led the way for the Lady Pirates in the win with 12 points while Kelley added 11. Grant finished with six points, Nina Orozco-Charlo added five, Jessica Bagnell scored four and Mackenzie Banner and Heidi Rausch each scored two in the win.

The Yellowjackets were led by Alycia Sims with 15 points and Baylee Bergman with 13.

The Lady Pirates improve to 2-3 with the win.

The Pirates had trouble containing Stevensville’s Gavlak brothers at home Tuesday evening as freshman post Zack and older brother Tyler combined to score 37 of the Yellowjackets’ 67 points in a 67-59 win over Polson.

The Pirates running offense grabbed a 21-18 lead after one quarter of play, but the Yellowjackets used a 17-7 run in the second quarter to build a 35-28 halftime advantage.

Polson never recovered from the run as Stevensville outscored the Pirates 32-31 in the second half to hold on for the win.

Kyle Bagnell led the Pirates in scoring in the loss with 19 while Louis Mohr was also in double-digits with 16. Vince DiGiallonardo and Sheldon Fisher each chipped in with eight points, Tyler Krell added five and Cody Fischer finished with three points for the Pirates.

Zack Gavlak’s 25 points led Stevensville in the win while Josh Schultz added 17 and Tyler Gavlak had 12.

With the loss, the Pirates fall to 3-2 on the season.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will be back in action Jan. 7 as they continue Northwest A Conference play with home games against rival Ronan.
