RONAN — The Bulldogs had a tough week as they lost a pair of rivalry games.

After falling to the Vikings 50-48 in the final seconds Tuesday, the Bulldogs saw the wheels fall off in the second quarter against the Chiefs Saturday in a 56-18 loss.

In a back-and-forth game against the Vikings, the Bulldogs took a 48-47 lead with 25 seconds to play, but failed to box out on the Vikings’ winning shot attempt with 3.3 seconds to play.

“They board the miss, and they go to the line... they win 50-48,” Mission coach Lloyd Phillips said.

Despite the tough loss, Phillips said he saw something in his team that wasn’t there last year.

“The writing was on the wall that it was going to go down to the wire. I could see and feel a different look in our guys’ eyes. Not only did they want to win they expected to win,” Phillips said. “That’s huge,” he added.

Even though the Bulldogs expected to win, they still didn’t have an answer for Vikings’ post players Chance Rosenbaum and Stephen Delaney. Rosenbaum finished with 17 points and Delaney added 10.

“Charlo’s strength and overall size hurt us the most, especially at the end, but we had a chance at the end and that’s all we can ask for,” Phillips said.

Dylan Evans led the Bulldogs with 14 points. Nikko Alexander came alive in the second half to finish with 10 points. Bulldog point guard Austin McDonald added nine as Phillips said he starts to assume his role. Austin Durglo added eight.

In Ronan Saturday, the Bulldogs stayed right with the Chiefs in the first quarter and only trailed 14-12 going into the second quarter, but then the Chiefs’ full-court press and pace took over the game as they went on a 42-6 run over the next two quarters.

A bucket by Spencer Ahlborn underneath the basket with 16 seconds left in the second quarter was the only points the Bulldogs would score in the second and third quarter.

“We didn’t have a great week of practice, which is usually isn’t the best of signs. I still thought we were prepared to play a very good and experienced team at their pace,” Phillips said. “In the first quarter we showed we could play with them, but from then on my team played as poorly as possible. I take credit for that. We will do what we need to do in order to get better and compete.”

Stuart Grant led the Bulldogs with seven points. Jarred Smith-Brown added four.
