ALBERTON — The Lady Vikings were maybe a little too excited to start the season and a less aggressive Lady Viking defense in the second half was the key in a 32-27 season-opening victory against Superior Friday.

After watching the Lady Bobcats take their first lead with five seconds left in the first half and going into to the locker room trailing 15-14, the Lady Vikings took control of the game by completely shutting out Superior in the third quarter to take a 27-15 lead into the final quarter.

“We quit fouling. That was key for us,” Charlo coach Bret Thompson said. “We didn’t press as much and focused more on half-court rather than full-court. We stayed off the ball a little more and didn’t foul people 40 feet away from the basket.”

By playing smart defense, the Lady Vikings not only shut down the Lady Bobcats’ offense, but were also able to jumpstart their offense. The Lady Vikings scored 13 points in the third quarter after only scoring 14 in the opening half, where Thompson had to mix-and-match his lineup because of foul trouble.

Deondra Brown opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to give the Lady Vikings a 17-15 lead. Brown finished with nine points. Kinley Pope also had nine points and had seven of the Lady Vikings’ 32 rebounds. Jessica Foust pitched in with six points. Rachel Hoyt added four points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Dawn Blevins had four points and led the team with four assists and five steals.

In Alberton Saturday, Charlo’s inside game was too much for the Lady Panthers and the Lady Vikings’ sailed to a 50-25 nonconference victory. The Lady Vikings’ exploited the Lady Panthers’ box-and-one by going inside to Pope and Hoyt. Pope finished with a game-high 15 points and finished tied for the team high in rebounds with Hoyt with six. Hoyt added nine points and led the team with four steals.

The Lady Vikings got off to a good start, which let Thompson play everybody on his young team at least two quarters. Eight Lady Vikings finished on the scorer’s sheet. Freshman Jordan Ludeman added seven points and Brown finished with six.

The Lady Vikings (2-0) travel to Mission Thursday and host Noxon Saturday.
