Temperatures in the 20s didn’t dissuade shoppers from coming downtown to take in the 6th Annual Art Walk on Dec. 3, but the cold may have cut down on strolling. People quickly walked from store to store, releasing snippets of Christmas carols as doors opened and closed. Inside stores, artists and musicians painted, drew and played their instruments or displayed examples of their work. Sparkling lights, refreshments, gift items and neighbors and friends to visit with combined to kick off the Christmas season.

Santa and Mrs. Clause were ensconced at The Cove, discussing Christmas wishes with children and handing out candy canes.

Owen Daniel, 4, explained to Santa that he would like “a real frog” for Christmas, the only thing on his list. Owen liked the candy cane, but he said it was “a little bit scary” to sit on Santa’s lap.

Animals seemed to be the Christmas wish of the day. Eli Van Meter Smith, 7, came to talk to Santa about a horse and a hamster.

Both Eli and Owen surely enjoyed the Parade of Lights with its many parading animals which included a donkey with a Rudolph nose, a draft horse and dogs in festive costumes. The parade began at 7 p.m. just as the Art Walk was winding down. The Great Scots led the way followed by fire trucks, four-wheel drive vehicles, floats, a Humvee with “Joy to the World, the Lord is Come” painted on its windshield and, of course, Santa and Mrs. Clause in a golf cart.

The parade ended near the Showboat Cinema where Santa and his helpers passed out bags of candy to the children, and the town Christmas tree was lighted.

Downtown businesses stayed open until 7 p.m.

Next week, the Polson Business Community will transform its windows into Living Windows from 5 to 7 p.m.
