Montana should be proud, and the Mission Valley even prouder.

Our own Melinda Owen, a 2003 Polson High School graduate, trains daily (six days a week) for the chance to represent the United States in the 2012 summer Olympic games.

She seeks to earn a place as one of three women pole-vaulters who will compete against the world’s best in just two years.

This incredibly talented young woman will compete against approximately 25 of the nation’s top lady pole vaulters in June of 2012 in hopes of being one of the top three who’ll then comprise the U.S. Olympic team.

What an incredible accomplishment it is to be asked to train at the Olympic center, and to have made it this far.

It was heartwarming to see both the community’s support of Melinda’s efforts as well as her response during Saturday’s Live Locally race. Proceeds from the 5K will support Melinda in her quest to be world-best. (See related story on page 23.)

Her current high vaults are an amazing 15 feet and the list of athletic titles and awards earned throughout her athletic career is a long one. But the young lady hasn't let it her go to her head. Melinda’s one down-to-earth, earth-lovin’ girl - humble about her accomplishments, sincere in her graciousness and passionate about the planet.

On her website Melinda dedicates a page and separate blog to a cause she’s committed to, recycling. The page features links with facts about recycling, how to find local recycling centers nearest your area and how to make your home eco-friendly.

What a great role model she is for today’s youth. Melinda has proven that hard work and determination can take you far … hopefully they’ll take her all the way to London in the summer of 2012.

Her voice cracked with emotion Saturday as she spoke to Live Locally participants - thanking them for their support and promising to do her best to represent both her community and the state of Montana well. She’s determined to make her hometown proud, but we all know she already has.
