CHARLO — The Charlo boys track team took home first place honors last weekend, earning 62 team points — 14 points higher than second place finisher Belt. This was the largest scoring gap between sequential places in the entire tournament.

Tyler Delaney took home first place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.46. Fellow Vikings Webb O’Neill and Tra Ludeman also pulled down first place trophies in pole vault and the 110 meter high hurdles, respectively.

“It went really well,” said Aspen Runkel. “I thought I did very well.”

Her coach Bret Thompson agreed.

“I thought we had a great weekend,” he said. “It was a really good meet for her. She had the largest number of medals, four of any of my kids. Her and Tyler (Delaney) both ... This is the third year in a row the boys have won state. Good kids, hard work, put them in the right events and we ended up with a lot of individual winners in different events this year. The last couple of them we had was one or two kids doing most of the scoring, so it was different this year.”

Runkel said she can’t wait for next year.

“We were hoping to get a title at state, obviously, but we did very well for what we came in with and I was really proud of everyone we went with,” she said.

Senior Rachel Hoyt has not decided if she will or will not compete at the collegiate level, but did end her career with a top-finish in the 100 meter high hurdles. This finish helped the girls earn the 26 points they needed for fifth place.

“I got to end it with my team,” she said. “The girls ended up fifth and the boys got another championship. The athletes are happy, the coaches are happy ... couldn’t ask for much more, and it’s like I say every year — going to state is a great opportunity. Being able to compete with the best 20 kids at that level is awesome.

“I just feel really blessed to have had that opportunity and it’s an awesome deal to compete ... it’s just awesome.”
