POLSON — If archaic stereotypes are true, all librarians are all bun-wearing, grey-haired ladies wearing cardigans with a Kleenex pushed up their sleeve and rubber-soled shoes. They fiercely shush people so it’s quiet in the library and stamp out fun.

Not so in Polson.

Here librarians are always thinking of ways to entice more people to read, and their newest project is reading nooks. North Lake County Public Library Director Marilyn Trosper initiated a project called “Take Time to Read.”

The project involves four book nooks, located at various Polson businesses. Each nook has a hardwood rocking chair and a shelving unit filled with gently used books for all ages.

The book nooks have been placed where people typically spend time waiting, Trosper said, so while folks are sitting, they can read and then, if they want, take the item home. Librarian Jery Walker will be restocking the nooks.

The nooks are located at Beacon Tire, Wash N Go, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Health Clinic and Providence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Diane Buchmann from Beacon Tire said customers are enjoying the reading nook.

“People are really amazed that they can take the books, and most people say they will bring them back,” Buchmann said, since they get drawn into the story and want to finish reading.

“There is such a nice variety of books,” she added.

Funding for the nooks was provided by a grant from the Great Polson community Foundation and by North Lake County Public Library.

Trosper also said the library would like to place four more books nooks in the coming year. Interested parties should contact the NLCPL at 883-8225 or e-mail polsoncl@polson.lib.mt.us.
