Tough division sends Lady Vikings packing

BUTTE – The Charlo Lady Viking basketball team’s postseason run came to an end last week as Charlo began the Western C Divisional Tournament with a loss to Ennis, and a win over Manhattan Christian followed by a win over Superior. The Lady Vikings then lost to Drummond later on Saturday. Despite not advancing to State, the Lady Vikings capped off a solid season with a 19-5 record.

In the consolation game, Charlo started off strong against a talented Drummond team, leading 15-13 at halftime. The Trojans rallied in the second half, going on a 12-8 run in the third to lead by two with one quarter remaining. Drummond closed out the game by holding Charlo to only eight additional points, while the Trojans added another 11 to secure a 36-31 win. Pope led Charlo with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Dawn Blevins and Deondra Brown added four points apiece. Drummond was led by Krissy Paske’s 12 points, while Frankie Bignell tacked on seven.

In the loser-out game, Superior grabbed an early 13-9 lead, but the Lady Vikings remained within striking distance in the second frame, down 28-20 at halftime. In the third quarter, Charlo began to cut away at Superior’s lead. By the beginning of the fourth, the Lady Vikings were within five points of taking the lead. Charlo closed out the game with a 21-13 run, as Jordan Ludeman and Kinley Pope knocked down both of their free throws to lift Charlo over the Lady Bobcats, 55-52. Pope led Charlo with 17 points, while Deondra Brown tacked on 15. Rachel Hoyt added 14, and Dawn Blevins finished with 11.

It was a close matchup, as the game was tied up 10-10 after the opening frame, with the Eagles going on to lead by one point at halftime.

Manhattan Christian outscored Charlo 8-6 in the third, but the Lady Vikings hadn’t given up just yet.

Charlo began knocking down shots, putting up 12 points to the Eagles’ six to edge out a four-point victory, winning 38-34.

Rachel Hoyt, Jordan Ludeman and Deondra Brown all finished with nine points to pace the Lady Vikings.

Manhattan Christian was led by Chelsea VanDyk, who finished the game with 14 points, while Julie Ovenell tacked on eight.

In the opening round, Charlo took on a tough Ennis team. The Lady Mustangs outscored Charlo 14-11 in the final frame to win by three, 47-44.

Ennis led 12-6 at the beginning of the second quarter, but the Lady Vikings were able to begin knocking down shots, taking a 22-20 lead at the break.

Ennis held Charlo to 22 points in the second half, allowing the Lady Mustangs to edge out a 47-44 win.

Pope led Charlo with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Dawn Blevins added 13 points and Deondra Brown tallied 10.

Mikayla Sullivan led Ennis with 17 points, while Tori Durham tacked on 12.
