CHARLO — Down early to Lincoln, the Charlo coaches decided to put the game in quarterback Chico Stipe’s hands – smart move.

The Charlo senior rushed for 278 yards and four touchdowns and threw for another 60 yards and two TDs to help the Vikings storm to a 60-14 Western C rout.

The Lynx came out with an aggressive defensive scheme, playing man-to-man coverage and sending everybody else at the quarterback. Their plan worked at first, shutting down the passing game and forcing the Vikings to make mistakes.

After falling behind 14-6 early in the second quarter, Charlo coaches Mike Krahn and Jim Petersen had a conference on the sidelines.

“We decided to put the ball in Chico’s hands and let him take over the game. They were sending everybody, so if he slips one tackle he’s going for a big play,” Krahn said. “He almost took us on his shoulders’ for a little bit, we were on our heels for awhile.”

With the ball in Stipe’s hands, the Vikings exploded for 38 points in the second quarter to take a commanding 44-14 lead into the break.

Stipe started the scoring in the quarter with 55-yard rumble and gave the Vikings their first lead with a 43-yard TD run.

Once the Lynx had to respect the Vikings’ running attack it opened up the air for the Vikings.

Stipe connected with Austin Bauer for a 25-yard score and Tra Ludeman for a 31-yard TD. Bauer also had a 25-yard pick-six in the quarter.

Kolten Andrews added a 26-yard TD run in the third quarter. Andrews finished with 58 yards on eight carries and also had an interception. Stipe longest run of the day came in the third quarter on a 78-yard TD.

“He just had a monster came. We put the ball in his hands, and he came through big for us,” Krahn said.

The Vikings finished the scoring with a safety on a sack by Louis Cox.

The Vikings’ defense sacked Jerum Auclaire three times. Chance Rosenbaum and Joel Lewis each had a sack and finished with seven tackles.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 6-0 and 5-0 in conference. They host Philipsburg for homecoming Friday.
