ST. IGNATIUS — For a first time cross-country runner, sophomore Kaylie Durglo has been very successful in a short amount of time.

“I tried cross-country for the experience; it sounded fun,” she said.

She soon realized that not only was running fun, she was good at it.

“Kaylie was an excellent contributor to what was a magical season for our girls’ team,” said cross-country coach Patrick Murphy. “As a second-year program, finishing fourth at state was an excellent achievement for these girls. It really speaks volumes about these student-athletes.”

Durglo couldn’t agree more and said the best part of the sport was her teammates.

“We were a close team,” she shared.

As a first-year runner Durglo’s personal best time was under 22 minutes. Murphy said her ninth-place finish at Divisionals is an excellent achievement that she will certainly build upon in the coming years.

Now Durglo will represent all Bulldog harriers in the Down Under International Cross Country meet in Australia at the end of June to early July.

It will be the first time Durglo will travel to Australia, and she has started to fundraise with raffles, bakes sales and an anticipated yard sale in March.

“I’m pretty excited,” Durglo said of traveling out of the country for the first time and competing.

The experience will also help her as an athlete. Improving as a runner is goal for Durglo next year, and she hopes to run under 21 minutes next season.

“I think that any time an athlete makes the commitment outside of the regular season to train, it has a positive impact on their development as an athlete,” Murphy said. “I think that this experience will inspire Kaylie and will strengthen her physically and mentally as a runner.”
