DAYTON — A one-car crash north of Dayton killed passenger Leroy Carlson, 43, and sent the driver of the '92 Toyota Tacoma to the hospital early Sept. 23.

According to Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Andy Horton, the crash was discovered at about 7:20 a.m. at mile marker 83.7. However,  Deputy Lake County Coroner Rick Lenz said the accident might have happened as early as 3 or 4 a.m.

Horton said the Tacoma was southbound on U.S. Highway 93 when, for unknown reasons, it drifted off the northbound boundary of the road. The vehicle rolled several times and became airborne. Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt, and both were ejected.

The driver was found about 15 feet from the vehicle with serious injuries, and was lifeflighted to Kalispell and then transported by air to Seattle.

Carlson was found about 40 feet from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Upon initial appraisal, Horton said, “I don’t think excess speed with a factor.”

The wreck is still under investigation and results of blood tests for drugs and alcohol have not been completed.
