PABLO — The Chiefs and Maidens cross country squads had a tough time at Silver Fox Golf Course Saturday after posting impressive times at the King Ranch Invitational in Frenchtown Sept. 15.

The Chiefs came away with a sixth-place finish Saturday in Pablo but were third among the Class A schools at the meet.

“We were right there behind Whitefish and Columbia Falls and that is not bad at all,” Ronan assistant coach Noelle Decker said. “Whitefish is sure to be a contender at state once again. The boys have had a lot of speed workouts lately and a lot of two-a-day practices. They were probably a little tired and it showed. We are just hoping that all of that hard work will pay off in the end.”

Justin Dusty Bull led the way for the Chiefs at Pablo, finishing 27th overall with a time of 18:00, Cody Johnson was 30th at 18:04, Kevin Wroblewski was 32nd with a time of 18:09 while Brady Oakland was right behind at 33rd, also with a time of 18:09. Jordan Franklin finished 41st with a time of 18:47, Danny Romero was 45th with a time of 18:59 and Robbie Hocker ran a 19:43 to finish 49th.

“The great thing about the boys’ performance at Silver Fox was that there was only a nine-second difference from our first to our fourth runners,” Decker said. “We ran together as a group pretty much the whole time.”

The Chiefs had a much more impressive performance at Frenchtown Wednesday, finishing second with a team score of 65, just seven points behind first-place Anaconda.

“Frenchtown was really good for us mentally. Everyone seemed to post really good times there,” Decker said.

Wroblewski was the Chiefs’ top runner at Frenchtown, finishing fifth with a time of 16:50. Dusty Bull also had a great race, finishing seventh with a time of 16:58.

Johnson was 11th with a time of 17:11, Romero ran a 17:35 to come in 17th, Oakland was 25th with a time of 18:09, Franklin ran an 18:33 to finish 33rd and Hocker was 57th with a time of 19:37.

Edmond Dupuis ran a 19:57 and finished 61st for the Chiefs, Dustin Goldsby ran a 20:02 to finish 62nd, Eric Malmquist was 65th at 20:12, Jaden McNair was 75th with a 21:21, Nathaniel Rodgers ran a 21:31 to finish 76th, Marley Tanner was 79th at 21:53 and Armel Jones was 81st with a 22:16.

The Maidens were also in action at both meets, finishing fifth in Pablo and sixth in Frenchtown.

Ashley Grandchamp was the leader for the Ronan girls at both meets, finishing 25th Saturday with a time of 21:58 and eighth at Frenchtown with a time of 21:09.

Jade Grey was 34th Saturday with a time of 24:01 and 13th at Frenchtown with a time of 22:29, Rachel Hardy was 37th at Pablo with a time of 24:38 and 31st at Frenchtown with a time of 23:28, Kiana Howell ran a 24:38 in Pablo to finish 37th and a 24:54 in Frenchtown to finish 32nd and Christen Falcon ran a 28:05 to finish 42nd at Pablo and a 27:48.75 to come in 44th at Frenchtown.

Angela North Pigeon ran for the Maidens at Frenchtown and finished 39th with a time of 27:04 while Raymi Clairmont finished 43rd with a time of 27:48.47.

“Our girls team is just so young this year,” Decker said. “Besides Ashley and Rachel, everyone else is either a freshman or a new runner.”

Both teams will be in action Saturday as they race at Hamilton.
