News from Lake County Buckle Up Coalition and Clint Cottle, Polson Police Department

POLSON — Thanksgiving is one great American holidays that involves a lot of travel. Family and friends traveling across Montana, to the airport to fly to another state or country or just across town take to the roads to visit and celebrate together, making it one of the busiest travel times of the year.

And with all the excitement, travelers can become more focused on celebrations than getting to their destinations as safely as possible. All too often those distractions have deadly consequences.

That is why it is important to do the single most effective thing to save your life in the event of a traffic crash: wear a seat belt.

Montana’s seat belt law states that all passengers must be buckled and all children properly restrained in car seats until they are 6 years old and weigh 60 pounds.

Since such a simple step can be the difference between life and death, one would think that everyone would always wear their seat belts while in a car.

Yet, that is not the case. Too many people still don’t use these lifesavers and unfortunately, deaths which could have been prevented keep occurring every day. These deaths are unnecessary and preventable.

Be careful on the roads and don’t let this Thanksgiving end in tragedy. Insist on proper seat belt use by everyone you travel with. Your family is expecting you for dinner— take three seconds and buckle up. Every trip, every time.
